Ard Bia Berlin

Ard Bia Berlin is a residential space for artistic research, located in the heart of the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin. Sited in a ground-floor apartment of a traditional Berlin Altbau (Old Building) residence, it comprises of three individual studio/residence rooms plus additional communal spaces. Based around a dynamic live/work setting, it offers artists and cultural practitioners from Ireland and other international locations the time and space to conduct in-depth research and professional development in a major cultural, artistic and urban hub. Initiated in 2007 with former project director Rosie Lynch, Ard Bia Berlin is maintained and supported by Galway (Ireland) based gallerist Aoibheann Mac Namara.
ARD BIA Berlin – the German based gallery connected to Galway’s Ard Bia Restaurant and Gallery at Nimmo’s – is presenting work by Irish artists in an important art showcase in the German capital.
Ard Bia will showcase the work of five Irish artists – Cecily Brennan, Linda Quinlan, Kieran Moore, Andrew Vickery, and the group Icelandic Love Corporation – at Preview Berlin – The Emerging Art Fair which began yesterday and runs until Sunday.
Preview Berlin is the city’s platform for a young generation of national and international galleries and project spaces with its primary focus on emerging artists.
Ard Bia is Berlin’s first Irish orientated visual arts space and one of the first independent Irish visual art spaces to go ‘international’. It is the brainchild of Aoibheann MacNamara and Rosie Lynch.
Ard Bia Berlin – a four-roomed ground floor apartment in a residential setting – aims to promote and supports the work of Irish artists abroad through its residency programme.

rd Bia Berlin provides three individual live-in studio spaces within one apartment for artists or cultural practitioners. In addition to the communal kitchen and bathroom spaces, there is a mixed-use communal room, which can be at times a social space for the residents, a quiet place for reading and research, or a forum for discussion or the presentation of work.
Ard Bia Berlin provides the additional supports of WiFi, a communal printer and scanner, and a digital video projector. The administrator is always at hand to provide local knowledge or make suggestions to assist the residents’ own self-organised research and activities.
Residency fee is €400 per month, or calculated at €100 per week for every part month. Artists can apply to stay for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of six months. Ard Bia Berlin will assist artists, through a letter or other documentation, in applying in their home countries for grant support for their time here.
Ard Bia Berlin puts out occasional call-outs and advertisements for new residency artists, but encourages also unsolicited applications, as new residency spaces are often becoming available.
